MANIFESTO REAL CINEMA
(by Vitaly Mansky)
1- Absence of a script.
Script and reality are incompatible. Before filming begins, only the place where the movie starts, sometimes its characters and the general concept are determined. Once filming begins, only real events determine the dramaturgy.
At the same time, real cinema does not claim to be an impartial record of fact. A real movie is not a copy of reality.
2. There are no restrictions for the filmmaker in the filming process. Except legal ones.
Ethical issues are resolved not on the set, but in the process of editing the film.
For immersion in the space of the filmed object and in the world of the characters, all existing technological methods are acceptable: the usual camera, observation, hidden shooting, etc.
3. the filmmaker should not become a hostage of technology.
Film, studio sound and light, perspective and composition can be neglected for the sake of recording real events. Image quality is secondary. Reality is primary.
4. In the course of the film, the filmmaker should tell the viewer the time and place of filming with the credits.
(Unless it can harm the objects or characters being filmed.)
5. No dramatization or reconstruction.
The filmmaker may provoke the characters to any action and may be a participant in the events himself. The ficton film element in a real cinema cannot be present.
6. There are no restrictions on the length of the movie.
Up to an endless, live broadcast.
7. Rejection of the concept of “the end of the movie”.
No film can be completed, as reality is infinite. As a result, the filmmaker can make new versions of the movie at any time and continue filming after the first public screening. In the end credits, the date of the first public screening of this version of the movie is put instead of the word “end”. In the case of new versions, the date of the first public screening is given after the date(s) of the previous versions.
