Dominika has been visiting Ukraine regularly since 2014. Through our project, we invite you to experience a three-part documentary followed by discussion.

The first part features a short video diary filmed in Kyiv just one week before the full-scale war began on February 24, 2022. A solidarity march was taking place on Maidan Square at the time, and most residents of Kyiv still did not grasp the looming threat of war.

The second part presents a noir-style film report from Kyiv’s streets at night during the first winter and Christmas of the war. With attacks on the city’s energy infrastructure, Kyiv was plunged into darkness. How did its inhabitants adapt to life without light? And what unexpected effect did the reduced light pollution have on stargazing?

The third film focuses on a theater in Kherson, a city directly on the front line and the only Ukrainian city that has experienced both Russian occupation—lasting almost eleven months—and subsequent liberation. Kherson is under constant shelling. Over the course of filming, even the theater building itself changed: at first intact, it ended up without a single unbroken window. Situated in the city center, it is a frequent target. Is it possible to perform theater under such conditions? And why do locals still feel it is better than living under occupation?
